Phoenix native, Jr. Coyotes product Knies chosen for 2022 U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team

USA Hockey announced tonight the final roster for its 2022 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team, a group that includes an Arizona connection.

University of Minnesota freshman forward Matthew Knies, a Phoenix native and Jr. Coyotes alum, was named to the team.

“We’re excited about the roster we’ve put together,” said John Vanbiesbrouck, Team USA general manager and also the assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. “The Olympics are the biggest stage in sports, and it was fun to hear the enthusiasm our players have to represent their country. We’re fortunate to have a deep talent pool — thanks in part to all the great work of our volunteers in communities across the nation — and with the mix of players who are part of our team, we’re looking forward to competing for a gold medal in Beijing.”

The squad will represent the United States at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games Feb. 3-20 in Beijing, China.

In 20 games with the Gophers this season, Knies has recorded 20 points (seven goals, 13 assists) to rank second on the team in scoring.

“It’s a surreal feeling to be given this opportunity, and I feel very fortunate to have another chance to wear the colors and the crest after the World Junior Championship event was canceled,” Knies said. “It’s an honor to represent the United States as well as Gopher hockey at the highest level of international competition, and I’m excited to do so alongside two of my teammates in Brock Faber and Ben Meyers.”

Knies was drafted in the second round (57th overall) by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2021 NHL Draft.
