Jr. Coyotes alum King signs ECHL contract with defending champion Komets

The defending ECHL champion Fort Wayne Komets have announced the signing of rookie defenseman D.J. King for the 2021-22 season.

“DJ is a hardnosed, tough-to-play-against defenseman who is reliable at his own end of the ice,” said Fort Wayne head coach Ben Boudreau. “He comes from a great background and will be a great addition to our group.”

The 20-year-old King amassed seven goals and 24 points with 140 penalty minutes in 104 games over two seasons in the OHL with the Saginaw Spirit and Hamilton Bulldogs.

His father, Derek King, played 830 NHL games with the New York Islanders, Hartford Whalers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and St. Louis Blues. He’s also served as head coach of the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs for the past three seasons.

During his youth career, King played for the Jr. Coyotes and spent two seasons with USA Hockey’s NTDP.
