Phoenix products, ASU commits Walker, Castor nab weekly USHL awards

The United States Hockey League (USHL) on Monday announced the CCM Forward, Defenseman and Goaltender of the Week for Week 5 of the 2016-17 season and Arizona State University commits Johnny Walker and Jaxon Castor bagged two of the honors.

Forward: Johnny Walker – Chicago Steel
3 GP: 3 goals, 1 assist, +3 rating

Walker and the Steel traveled early in the week for back-to-back away games both Wednesday and Friday, where he extended his goal scoring streak to five games with two goals and an assist. The Arizona State University commit added one more goal on the weekend Saturday night to extend his streak to a career-best six games. Walker leads Chicago in goals scored and is second in team scoring. His seven goals rank him first in the USHL. The Phoenix native has scored in seven of his nine games, including one game-winning tally. The six-game streak is also the longest point streak of Walker’s junior hockey career.

The Steel selected Walker in the 2016 USHL Phase II Draft in the first round (11th overall). Walker has previously played for the Topeka Roadrunners (NAHL), Minot Minotauros (NAHL) and Culver Academy (USHS) after time back home with the Jr. Coyotes, Phoenix Firebirds and Phoenix Polar Bears youth programs.

He would then follow up the perfect performance with another stellar start, stopping 22 of 23 shots to help the Fighting Saints sweep the weekend. Castor had a shutout streak that lasted 118:11 minutes over three games. The Phoenix native is committed to Arizona State University and is in his second season with the Fighting Saints. Castor’s 2.13 GAA ranks in the USHL top-10, while his minutes (479) and saves (177) rank third and sixth, respectively.

Dubuque selected Castor in the 2015 USHL Phase II Draft in the second round (28th overall) from the Jr. Coyotes’ 18U AAA team (T1EHL).
