OneHockey tournaments going full steam ahead, with safety the No. 1 priority

Ask most hockey folks what the top overall tournament program is, and most will answer “OneHockey.”

Known as a group that takes tournaments to the next level with a unique setup, and balancing brackets to put competitiveness at the forefront, OneHockey continues to grow not only in California, but across the country with USA Hockey-sanctioned events as well as non-USA Hockey events and in Europe.

“We’ve had six tournaments since August and we’ve been very lucky that these did not yielded any positive COVID cases,” said OneHockey president Sebastien Fortier. “Since COVID, we have followed all safety regulations for whatever state we are in and any rules each rink may have. You can still play hockey and be safe, and that’s what we have been doing and will continue to do.

“We wear masks, we social distance, we have teams arrive to the rink 15 minutes before their game, and we don’t gather in the lobbies. Everybody follows the rules and because of that, we’ve been able to keep having our tournaments.”

Fortier also noted that unlike many tournaments, OneHockey centers the events around the players.

“We have music, we have players of the game, a mascot to entertain, we do it all for the kids and make it as fun as we possibly can,” Fortier said. “We make it so that after a team comes to one of our tournaments, they’ll want to return. “Often we see parents come in our office to tell us this is the best-run and most fun tournament they have seen.”

“Here’s an example. A couple years back, we had one team from one association come to a OneHockey tournament and the next year, 15 teams came from that one association to 2-3 of our tournaments. This has grown pretty fast, and we’re excited.”

As well, an annual tournament in Hershey, Pa., at the beginning drew 15 teams one year, 25 the next, then 50, and this season, 90 teams took part.

“All the teams that come always have that reminder about what makes OneHockey the best quality,” said Fortier. “We have always been about the kids, about the customer service, and being immaculate. No other tournament can say that.”

OneHockey is also looking forward to their new 55 MM North Phoenix arena in 2021 and will host 12 tournaments a year for both youth and adults.
